With New York Fashion Week now in full swing, Diane von Furstenberg and the city's mayor, Michael Bloomberg, met yesterday to outline the positive effects the fashion industry has on the capital, as well as announcing new proposals to help improve its future - reports WWD. The most exciting of these includes a new competition to find NY's most innovative store, with the winner landing a free temporary retail space and marketing and public relations services, a fund to help emerging designers use local manufacturers and a job placement programme for college graduates.
Bloomberg said that New York's fashion industry employs 173,000 - which accounts for 5.7 per cent of its entire workforce, making $2 billion (£1.2 billion), in tax revenue every year.
